Class Description

The Education/ Teacher Cadet program provides an opportunity for students to explore the field of education while allowing school districts to encourage and "grow" their own teachers! Teacher Cadet students, called Cadets, learn a wide range of education theory and practice. After completing pre-placement activities, cadets are placed in an internship at a school in their home district. At the internship site cadets work side-by-side with a professional educator which allows them to observe, perform, and evaluate current teaching practices. Back in the Teacher Cadet Academy classroom, cadets strengthen their understanding by documenting their observations and achievements in their TCA portfolio.

*This course may be available for college credit through Southwestern Michigan College at the Niles High School location.

Career Outlook

Preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school teachers play a vital role in the development of children. What children learn and experience during their early years can shape their views of themselves and the world and can affect their later success or failure in school, work, and their personal lives. Preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school teachers introduce children to mathematics, language, science, and social studies.

Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.

In 2010, the median annual wage of kindergarten teachers was $48,800 and the median annual wage of elementary school teachers was $51,660..

The median annual wage of high school teachers was $53,230 in 2010.

The median annual wage of special education teachers was $53,220 in 2010.
